Josie Rourke, artistic director of The Donmar Warehouse, will make her big screen debut with this film, which will be released by Focus Features in the US and by Universal Pictures International in the rest of the world.
The first draft of the screenplay was written by Michael Hirst, before being reworked by Beau Willimon, nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay of The Ides of March and nominated for an Emmy Award for the House of Cards series ; the script is based on the biography written by John Guy”My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots”, while at the helm of the production are the Oscar nominees Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin.
Along with Robbie and Ronan, Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Martin Compston and Brendan Coyle, along with David Tennant and Guy Pearce, will also take part in the cast.
Mary Queen of Scots will explore the turbulent existence of the charismatic Maria Stuart, Queen of France at sixteen and widow only eighteen; Maria refused to marry again by returning to her native Scotland to regain possession of the legitimate throne, but clashing with the other young and charismatic sovereign, Elizabeth I, challenging each other to claim her primacy in the political as well as in the affective and social, thus marking an indelible mark in history.
